Composting food and yard waste at your house is part of daily life. Since 2012, food and yard waste service has been required for all households of 1-4 units, and since 2015, you can no longer put food and compostable paper, including food-soiled pizza boxes, paper napkins, and paper towels, in the garbage.

Recycle right. Austin Resource Recovery is asking residents and neighbors to keep “tanglers” out of their blue recycling carts. Tanglers are items such as plastic bags, trash bags, garden hoses, rope, strings of lights and other long, flexible materials which get tangled in the gears of the recycling sorting facilities, jamming the machinery and disrupting operations.

Compost bins and kitchen scrap buckets are available for purchase at City Hall Customer Service or online. Pick up items at the Newton Resource Recovery Center with proof of payment. Both compost bin styles are easy to assemble and allow for efficient, aerobic composting. They are made from a minimum of 50% post-consumer recycled plastic.
